The Gretton Project
A book about Charles Gretton by Warner Meinen and Dennis Radage
Project Update – January 2008
Let us first wish you all the best for 2008. We also want to thank you for your continued interest and support of our project. While we may not be contacting you frequently, we have catalogued the information that you have already so kindly given, along with any images that you have sent.
To date we are aware of 77 Charles Gretton clocks and watches, these include 28 table (spring) clocks, 30 longcase clocks and 18 watches, we are also aware of 1 lantern clock. Unfortunately, of these we have only identified 33 current owners, including those owned by museums and other associations, so this is our only potential resource base for obtaining detailed specifications and photographs. We are aware of other Gretton clocks that have passed through auction houses and dealers, but these have not been included in the 33 for which we have “final” contact details.
It is within our plans to travel to the UK and to meet as many owners as we can. During these visits we would welcome the opportunity to examine your timepiece, document its specifications and take high quality photographs.
You may have noticed that we have already promoted this project in all of the horological journals and magazines that are published in England and the USA. It has been a slow and often difficult process to convince owners to notify us of their Gretton clocks and watches, and to convince them to share information with us. This fact makes it doubly important for your continued support. Obviously, there are many more owners of Gretton clocks and watches out there somewhere.
If you would like further information on our progress, or if you possess or have identified additional Gretton clocks or information, we would certainly like to hear from you. If you have not already sent initial images of your clock, we would certainly appreciate this. These images help us accurately catalogue the piece and identify duplicate listings. However, in the meantime, we will continue our research and cataloguing and start to organize our 2008 schedule.
Again, we would like to thank you for your support and we look forward to sharing the pleasures of your Gretton timepiece in 2008.
With best wishes
